RICK SANTORUM

BACKGROUND:

  • Member of U.S. Senate (PA): 1995-2007
  • Member of U.S. House or Representatives (PA-18): 1991-1995

CURRENT POSITION: Opposes Common Core

VOTING RECORD/TIMELINE:

  • 2014: Santorum’s non-profit organization, Patriot Voices, comes out against Common Core.

QUOTES:

“From its beginning, the Common Core State Standards initiative has flown under the radar. Its funding, its implementation, and the substance of the standards it proposes have received little public attention, but all of them are wrong for families, wrong for students, and wrong for our teachers.”  — Rick Santorum campaign statement on Common Core via www.ricksantorum.com

“Fundamentally, the revolution that has to occur in education is one that has our children finishing school with both the values and the knowledge to work hard, serve their community and prosper in society. Those ideals won’t come from the federal government, Common Core, No Child Left Behind, or even from standards being set at the state level. It’s going to come from parents who have control over the education of their children.” — Rick Santorum letter to Patriot Voices members, 2014 via Truth in American Education

What troubles me the most is how fast these standards were adopted and how little transparency there was in the process. Not one state legislature voted on the Common Core standards. In the forty-five states where they have been adopted, it was by an act of the governor, the state secretary of education, or the state board of education. The people most affected by this enormous policy change—parents and teachers—never had a chance to weigh in.” — Santorum’s Article “The Troubles with Common Core,” 2014 via TownHall
