GIVEAWAY & SALE - Celebrating Columbus Day - CK - HSLDA Blog

Columbus Day, October 13th this year, is a US holiday commemorating the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492.

Christopher Columbus, the Italian-born explorer, had set sail two months earlier. Financed by the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, Columbus intended to chart a western sea route to China, India and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia. Yet he ended up landing in the Bahamas, and became the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings set up colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland during the 10th century.

Did You Know? Contrary to popular belief, most educated Europeans in Columbus’ day understood that the world was round, but they did not yet know that the Pacific Ocean existed. As a result, Columbus and his contemporaries assumed that only the Atlantic lay between Europe and the riches of the East Indies (history).

Columbus Day, the now-celebrated holiday, was unofficially celebrated in a number of cities and states as early as the 18th century. But in 1937, it became a federal holiday.

In honor of Columbus’ achievements, and to commemorate the start of America history, we’re giving away one copy of Drive Thru History: Columbus and the Pilgrims to the Freedom Trail DVD.

We’re also featuring a sale in our store for 10% off the Drive Thru History DVD, October 7-13!
