ON JANUARY 26, 2010, a decision by a United States immigration judge sent a shockwave across the world. In the decision, Judge Lawrence O. Burman granted asylum to Uwe and Hannalore Romeike, who had fled their native Germany in search of freedom from persecution for homeschooling. It was the first case ever to recognize homeschooling as a reason for granting asylum. Yet the Romeike’s now face another issue…

BLG SZ - The U.S. Government Wants to Deport This Family - You Can Help Keep Them Here 2 - CK - HSLDA BlogUwe and Hannelore Romeike were persecuted for homeschooling in Germany. They fled to the United States after facing exorbitant fines, forcible removal of their children, and possible imprisonment. The Romeikes were granted political asylum. The U.S. government appealed and the Board of Immigration Appeals reversed, ordering the Romeikes to be deported. HSLDA is appealing their case to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Oral arguments are scheduled for April 23, 2013.

Many of you have asked what you can do to help:

HSLDA has initiated a petition asking the Obama Administration to grant the Romeikes permanent legal status. We need 100,000 signatures on this White House petition by April 18. Please sign our petition and spread the word to your friends and family asking them to sign as well. Sign the Petition HERE.

By continuing to defend families like the Romeikes and by taking action to put this fundamental right in the text of our Constitution, we will send a clear message to the world that parental rights are indeed basic human rights that no country has a right to deny its people.
