Getting Started Down the Homeschool Path | Introducing Becky Cooke to the Blog

Growing up overseas, I was familiar with homeschooling (called correspondence school  way back when). And so when my oldest asked to be homeschooled, I was eager to explore the option. My husband and I went to a homeschool convention and vendor fair where we were amazed at the choice and quality of curriculum available. After much prayer, we started our homeschool journey with a 3rd grader, a kindergartener, and a preschooler.

When 9th grade rolled around, I blissfully considered it just the next year. I surrounded myself with homeschool families ahead of me in the process and marched forward trusting the Lord. I’m so glad the Lord doesn’t always let us see into the future, aren’t you? I’m also glad that the Lord causes our mistakes and painful experiences to fade and allows us to remember His blessings – just as we moms don’t remember as clearly the pain of childbirth as we do the wonder of new-born babes!

Even through the valleys and in spite of the struggles, the high school years were a wonderful part of our homeschool journey. They passed by so quickly and before I knew it, all three children (2 sons and 1 daughter) graduated high school and college and were launched into their careers. My oldest son is an attorney specializing in energy law. My second son is a computer software developer. My daughter is a nurse with a family practice group. She used her skills to support her husband through law school. Now that he’s graduated, she hopes to retire to be a stay-at-home mom with their first child.

Getting Started Down the Homeschool Path | HSLDA BlogIn 2005, HSLDA was crafting a high school program and I was privileged to come on staff as one of their high school consultants. I experience such satisfaction in meeting and interacting with moms and dads, lending an ear, providing encouragement, and helping to solve dilemmas. It’s too enjoyable to be considered a job; rather, it’s a ministry the Lord has called me to.

Throughout my life the Lord has patiently been teaching me to lean on Him for everything. Trusting the Lord is an exciting (and sometimes scary) way to live, but “faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass” (2 Thessalonians 5:14). Don’t trade this truth for counterfeit promises.

So how else do I minister? I edit for a magazine and several authors, which gives me opportunity to learn about many different topics. I serve on the boards of Breakthrough Intercessors Prayer Ministry and Preserving Bible Times. I also love to travel and recently returned from a study trip to Israel. If you’ve never been there, I highly recommend it.

Please keep checking the high school blog for postings about all aspects of high school. I hope it’ll be informative, useful, and encouraging to you as you homeschool these years.
